I offer this common shoe style of the period in a budget version. It has a 3.5mm (1/7in) thick sole and ties. It is tough but not quite as hard-wearing as my hand-stitched shoes and makes a good starter model. I recommend that you order these shoes with wooden patten style PAT-S.

Colours: varying shades of brown, depending on what I have in stock. Colours range from saddle-tan, to medium brown to dark brown. This is a variation of boot style LHB, here shown with a single set of plain round bronze buckles. There is a choice of buckle styles available and the number of buckles is variable too. This style is also available with two buckles around the ankles and a horizontal lace around the top. You can also supply me with your own buckles. This particular boot is not historically authentic, but worked to the customers specification. I can undertake similar bespoke work for you.

Cordovan Shoe with Rosette Openwork

Genuine turn-shoe made from museum-grade ivory-coloured alum-tawed goatskin. The famous Cordovan leather of the middle ages. It has a 4mm (1/6 in) sole. Closes with a bifurcated front-latchet on the outer side of the foot and has heel-stiffeners. In a historic context such shoes would have been worn by the very richest of people on the most ceremonial of occasions and hence they were not expected to last for more than a few hours.
All the archaeological remains of shoes of this type are in shreds – as is to be expected.

Pattens

In medieval times wooden pattens would be worn almost always out of doors and even indoors. They raise your expensive leather shoes beyond the puddles and keep your feet warm and dry. The initial expense saves a lot of money in the long run as the soles of your leather shoes just won't wear out when protected by pattens. Indeed without pattens one is not properly medievally shod.

Very high patten, 4 inch (10cm) thick sole. Very light as made from poplar wood. These pattens are very high-ranking.
Based on finds from London and similar to those in the painting "the Arnofini Wedding".
The embroidery is done in silk and can be multicoloured, but is done to the customers requirements.

These pattens are also the first piece of evidence for the re-emergence of hobnailed soles after the Romans left!
In the periods in between the leather soles of the shoes were to thin to allow hobnails to be anchored in them.

Indoor Pattens made with a cork sole that is covered with goats leather all round. Fastened with a nail and decorated on the insole and straps with embossed floral patterns.

Note on authenticity:
The soling layer of leather is glued on in this case to keep the price down. Under historic circumstances the bottom layer could have been tunnel-stitched. And with the thread invisible it would look just like a glued-on sole. For an additional £40.00 I can stitch the sole on in regular saddle-stitching like on the cork pattens with poulaine.

Cork-soled Patten with Poulaine and embossed decoration

Indoor Pattens made with a cork sole that is covered with goats leather all round. Fastened with a buckle and decorated on the insole and straps with embossed floral patterns.
The sole on these pattens has been sewn on in a channel and the stitching is visible along the edge of the sole.

Heel Cushions (Price: GBP 5.00):

These are modern leather covered latex wedges that you can wear inside your shoes. They help to prevent painful heels if you are not used to walking in flat-soled shoes. As they are loose you can order as many pairs as you like to wear with other shoes as well. In this case please specify for what shoe-size you are ordering.

Small Heels (Price: GBP 20.00):

These consist of a 6mm thick leather patch tunnel-stitched to the heel of the shoes. These heels are fully authentic and easily replaceable. We strongly recommend them as they prolong the life of your shoes, especially if you intend to walk on tarmac a lot.

Second Sole Layer (Price: GBP 30.00):

This is a second leather sole stuck onto the original sole layer. A small heel can also be added.

Custom Colours (please ask for a quote):

Some selected styles come in special colours. I will try to match your clothes when I dye your shoes for you. If I dye shoes for you I consider that a personal adjustment and the shoes will be excluded from my usual returns policy.
